Our current range of chess items consists of over 100 sets of chess pieces and about 80 chess boards in various materials, sizes and styles.
Clearly, we cannot show every combination of pieces and boards on our website (indeed, most combinations just wouldn't work together!)
Those chess sets we do list on our site are carefully selected to give you a good idea of how certain pieces and boards look together, both size wise and aesthetically.
We currently have almost 100 wood chess set combinations for you to browse.
However, many of our customers tell us they are slightly bewildered by such a large selection and would appreciate expert advice in choosing their ideal chess set.

This can be considered a "budget" price point, and chess sets at this level are often better suited for beginners and/or younger players.
At this level, we would suggest a smaller chess board and traditional Staunton pieces.

Many more opportunities present themselves at this price point - chess sets are available that are perfect for intermediate and club level players.
Several sets include rosewood chess pieces, which many consider a worthwhile upgrade from sheesham ("Indian rosewood").
Although the carvings are not likely to be as intricate as more expensive sets, and ebony is not a real option at this price point, our 3 suggested sets are all winners!

Chess sets in this price range should be considered very high-end - suitable for chess fans and players who expect their set to last many years and be passed down from generation to generation.
There is usually a much wider choice, from rosewood to lower-end ebony, with the extra money buying not only larger and heavier weighted, but more intricately carved pieces (especially on the knights, which often account for as much as 50% of the entire carving time for a set of chess pieces).
