Wood Chess Pieces - Our Recommendations!

We currently have over 60 different sets of wooden chess pieces available.
Although chess pieces are available in many different materials, traditionally carved wooden pieces remain the most popular choice.
Starting under $50, we have chess pieces suitable for beginners and casual players, all the way up to stunning quality ebony and rosewood pieces for the true connoisseur.
We are confident that we can provide you with the perfect set of chess pieces!

Below we have listed our favorite chess pieces, at various prices points.

Up to $50

This should be considered a "budget" price point, and chess pieces at this level are often ideally suited for beginners and/or younger players.
Our choice would be to go for the largest size possible. Sheesham (Indian rosewood) and boxwood are really the only choice of materials in this case and one should expect the amount of detailing on the pieces (especially the knights) to be minimal.

  Popular Budget Set
Recommended Up to $50 This is our most popular set of value chess pieces. With a king standing a good 3.75 inches tall, these well sized, Staunton style pieces have simply carved knights, felted bases and are single weighted.
A perfect starter set!

$50-100

A little extra money is usually rewarded with chess pieces that display greater detailing, are better finished and often double or triple weighted. Ideal for intermediate and club level players.
Although uncommon, some of our smaller sets at this price point feature rosewood pieces, sometimes with a size and/or quality of detailing trade-off.

  Rosewood Value
Recommended $50-100 These Lardy Staunton style chess pieces have a tournament standard 3.75 inches king, with all pieces being double weighted for a great playing experience.
Carefully sculptured knights, felted bases and rosewood quality make this one of our favorite intermediate set of chess pieces!

Laughing Knight Character
This set of chess pieces is unique due to the very unusual knights, whose jaws are open as though "laughing", hence the name...
These pieces are substantially sized with a 4 inch king and are double weighted - an all-round quality set of chess pieces and a great match for larger boards.

  Double Queens
Recommended $50-100 This compact set of pieces comes complete with double queens, a rarity at such a low price.

Fine detailing and heavy weighting gives the impression of a much more expensive set. Would be a great match for smaller, similarly colored chess boards.
Quality black/white chess pieces at a great price!

$100-200

Chess pieces in this price range can be considered professional quality - suitable for chess fans and players who expect only the best tactile feel whilst handling the pieces.
A larger choice of pieces is available, from rosewood to lower-end ebony, with the extra money buying not only larger and heavier weighted, but more intricately carved pieces (especially evident on the knights, which often account for as much as 50% of the entire carving time for a set of chess pieces).
We are sure that any of our favorites presented below will provide years of chess playing satisfaction!
