Guidelines
A well-matched chess set has pieces that are sized appropriately for the board.
Pieces that are too small for the board look "lost", and pieces that are too large will create a crowded, cluttered feel and make it difficult to move pieces without accidentally nudging or knocking over others.
Neither case is acceptable, but by bearing in mind a few simple "rules of thumb", such mismatches are less likely to occur.
The base size of the chess pieces in relation to the square size of the chess board.
Usually, the base of the king is measured, as this is generally the largest piece in the set.
The board square size should be around 20% larger than the base of the king.
For example, if the king has a base of 1.5 inches, then the squares should be approximately (1.5 * 1.2), or 1.8 inches.
Obviously, this is only a guideline, but try not to stray too far from these figures.
The height of the chess pieces in relation to the overall size of the board.
This is more difficult to quantify, and is generally not something that needs to be considered, since taller chess pieces usually have wider bases that require a larger board, in any case.
However, we consider a pleasing (and most popular) proportion is to partner chess pieces with boards that are about 4 to 5 times larger than the height of the king.
For example, 3.75 inch kings (our most popular size) match well with boards between 15 and 19 inches, the variation allowing for pieces with different base widths.
Of course, in our range of complete chess sets, we have pre-matched the chess pieces with the boards, to take all the guesswork away and guarantee a great looking, nicely proportioned chess set! | ---------------------------------------- | Top | |
